M6, an investment made with government, European and Japanese funds

“M6 Metro Line. 1 Mai – Otopeni, Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)” is a project of significant local relevance with a considerable regional and international impact.

One of the strategic financiers of the M6 Project is the Japan International Cooperation Agency – JICA, whose delegation made several official visits to Bucharest on Friday, 20th September 2024.

JICA investors met with representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, including Mr. Ionuț Săvoiu, State Secretary, and Ms. Mariana Ioniță, Secretary General, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Metrorex, under the coordination of Ms. Mariana Miclăuș, General Director, and from the Project Supervisor, International joint venture consisting of PADECO Co., Ltd.  – ORIENTAL CONSULTANTS GLOBAL Co., Ltd. – METROUL S.A.

The meeting discussed the project’s progress and reviewed the current state of its implementation.

The JICA delegation, led by Mr. Kei Toyama, Director General of the Europe Division, Department for the Middle East and Europe, accompanied by representatives from Metrorex, the Supervisor, and the Constructors, visited the sites of future stations on M6 Metro Line, Gara Băneasa and Tokyo.

The constructor of the South Section, designated for the works on the 1 Mai – Tokyo section, presented the progress made on the two future stations visited.

The progress of the works, recorded in the first half of September 2024 in the M6 Metro Line South Section Site Journal, is outlined below:

  • For the future Tokyo metro station, 270 metres of guide beam have been installed, along with 47 diaphragm wall panels and 358 plastic piles for soil reinforcement.
  • Works have commenced on the bored piles for the future interstation Aeroport Băneasa – Tokyo; out of a total of 180, 23 piles have been completed.
  • At the future Aeroport Băneasa station, 263 metres of guide beam have been installed, along with 24 diaphragm wall panels and 160 plastic piles.
  • For the future Gara Băneasa station, 35 diaphragm wall panels and 6 plastic wall panels have been completed for the TBM (tunnel boring machine) exit.
  • For the future interstation Piața Montreal – Gara Băneasa, 181 bored piles have been completed.
  • At the future Piața Montreal station, 191 metres of guide beam and 23 diaphragm wall panels have been installed.
  • At the future Expoziției station, 544 metres of guide beam and 45 diaphragm wall panels have been installed, and for the electrical station, 121 metres of guide beam and 17 diaphragm wall panels.
  • For the future interstation Pajura – Expoziției, more than 190 piles have been installed.
  • At the future Pajura station, 459 metres of guide beam and 10 diaphragm wall panels have been completed. At Access A, 42 bored piles have been installed.
  • At the future interstation 1 Mai – Pajura, 32 bored piles have been completed.
  • At the future 1 Mai metro station, site organisation works and utility relocation are being carried out.

Piața Montreal traffic restriction extended

The traffic restriction on Bd. Mărăști, in the area of Piața Montreal – Piața Presei Libere is extended until November 15, 2024, according to the renewed Traffic Notice.

Execution activities at the future metro station Piața Montreal on the alignment of the future M6 line, South Section, within the framework of the execution contract “Bucharest International Airport Rail access link project (Metro line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni). Design and execution of the resistance structure of stations, galleries and tunnels. Lot 1. – 1Mai-Tokyo” necessitate the closure of the three existing traffic lanes on Bd. Mărăști, between Piața Montreal and Piața Presei Libere.

The traffic diversion plan is endorsed by the Technical Traffic Commission of the Bucharest City Hall, Transportation Department, by Opinion No. 4257/08.04.2024, by the Bucharest Streets Administration, and by the Bucharest Traffic Police, by Opinion No. 2791116 SSR/BS/10.05.2024.

Traffic diversion and road signage in the works area are carried out in accordance with the legislation in force.

The detour is signposted by information panels about the restriction at the intersections: Bd. Ion Mihalache – Str. Aviator Popișteanu, Str. Aviator Popișteanu – Bd. Expoziției, Str. Parcului – Bd. Expoziției – Str. Aviator Traian Vasile, Bd. Mărăști – Str. Alexandru Constantinescu, and Bd. Mărăști – Bd. Mareșal Alexandru Averescu.

For pedestrians, crossing is ensured at the existing crossings at the ends of the restricted road section.

Temporary traffic restrictions at the Piața Presei Libere Passage

Access to the Piața Presei Libere Passage will be restricted from 23.04.2024 to 25.04.2024, 23:00 – 06:00.

Topographic operations are in progress, under the construction contract “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai-Otopeni). Design and Build – Civil Works for Lot 1.1: 1Mai-Tokyo” in the Piața Presei Libere Passage, at the upcoming Montreal station on the alignment of the future M6 metro line, South Section.

The installation of the topo markers in the underpass is carried out with the approval of the Road Traffic Police, General Directorate of the Bucharest Police.

With the exception of the intervals mentioned above, the traffic on the specified road segment will continue under normal conditions.

IMPORTANT: traffic is not restricted or diverted on the roadway outside the passage.

Signalization of the works will be carried out in accordance with legal requirements and, upon completion of the works, traffic will be reopened and the road signs will be restored to their original condition.

In order to minimize the inconvenience caused to traffic, works will be carried out exclusively at night.

Road traffic restrictions in the area of Piața Montreal – Piața Presei Libere

Bucharest, June 27, 2024 – For construction activities in the framework of the contract “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai-Otopeni). Design and Build – Civil Works for Lot 1.1: 1Mai-Tokyo” METROREX announces road traffic restrictions, scheduled to enter into force on 06.07.2024 until 07.09.2024. The traffic restriction measure is imposed by the works plan for the upcoming Piața Montreal subway station on the alignment of the future M6 metro line, South Section. Any changes that may occur along the way will be announced by means of an updated information notice. 
The traffic deviation plan has been approved by the Technical Traffic Commission of the Bucharest City Hall, the Transport Department, through Approval no. 4257/08.04.2024, by the Bucharest Streets Administration and by the Bucharest Traffic Police, through Approval no. 2791116 SSR/BS/10.05.2024.
The traffic restriction will be established in the area of Piața Montreal – Piața Presei Libere and consists in the occupation of the three existing traffic lanes on Mărăști Bd., on the Piața Montreal – Piața Presei Libere connection.
The diversion of traffic in the area of the works will be carried out in accordance with the legislation in force and will be signaled with the installation of information signs about the restriction at the following crossroads: Ion Mihalache Bd. – Aviator Popișteanu Street, Aviator Popișteanu Street – Expoziției Bd., Parcului Street – Expoziției Bd. -Aviator Traian Vasile Street, Mărăști Bd. – Alexandru Constantinescu Street and Mărăști Bd. – Mareșal Alexandru Averescu Bd. Pedestrians will cross the road at the existing crossings at the ends of the restricted road section.
The preparatory operations for the traffic diversion will be carried out with the support and under the supervision of the Traffic Police.

M6 metro line will provide a direct connection from Gara de Nord (North Railway Station) to the Otopeni International Airport. It will have a route of 14.2 km and will comprise 12 metro stations: Pajura, Expoziției – Pajura, Piața Montreal, Gara Băneasa, Aeroport Băneasa, Tokyo, Washington, Paris, Bruxelles, Otopeni, Ion I. C. Brătianu, Aeroportul Internațional Henri Coandă.

The diversion of road traffic from Bulevardul Expoziției due to construction works on M6 Metro Line

For construction activities under the contract “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai-Otopeni). Design and construction of station structures, galleries, and tunnels. Lot 1. – 1 Mai-Tokyo”, METROREX announces the diversion of road traffic on a section of Bulevardul Expoziției . This traffic diversion is scheduled to take effect on 19.09.2024, as part of the construction plan for the future “Expoziției – Piața Montreal” metro interstation, part of the future M6 Metro Line, South Section.

The traffic will be diverted in accordance with the plan approved by I.G.P.R. – Direcția Rutieră. Any further changes will be communicated through an updated announcement.

The traffic diversion and road signage in the work area will be implemented in line with current regulations, with traffic management overseen by representatives from the Brigada Rutieră, at times agreed with the appointed contractor and with at least 72 hours’ notice.

The construction will take place in two phases, during which traffic on Expoziției Boulevard will alternate, ensuring that at least one lane is maintained for each direction, in compliance with legal width requirements. Pedestrian crossings will be provided at the existing crossings located at each end of the restricted road section.

M6 Metro Line will provide a direct link from Gara de Nord to Otopeni International Airport. The 14.2 km route will include 12 metro stations: Pajura, Expoziției, Piața Montreal, Gara Băneasa, Băneasa Airport, Tokyo, Washington, Paris, Brussels, Otopeni, Ion I. C. Brătianu, and Henri Coandă International Airport.

The traffic restriction from Băneasa Train Station – Miorița Fountain is extended

The traffic restriction on Șoseaua București – Ploiești, in the area of Gara Băneasa – Fântâna Miorița, is extended until 08.10.2024, according to the renewed Traffic Permit.

The preparatory activities at the future Gara Băneasa metro station, part of the future M6 Metro Line, South Section, under the execution contract “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni). Design and Build – Civil Works for Lot 1.2: Tokyo – Aeroport Otopeni)”, necessitate the occupation of two traffic lanes on the inbound direction towards Bucharest (lanes I and II).

IMPORTANT: Road traffic will continue to flow on two lanes in each direction on Șoseaua București – Ploiești in the aforementioned area.

The traffic diversion plan has been approved by the Technical Traffic Commission within Bucharest City Hall, the Directorate of Transport, the Bucharest Roads Administration, and the Bucharest Traffic Brigade. The traffic diversion and road signage in the construction area are carried out in accordance with the legislation in force.

Traffic restriction on a lane of DN 1, on the Ploiești – Bucharest direction

From Tuesday, 03.09.2024, 11:00 p.m., traffic will be restricted on beltway next to the Ikea overpass, which branches off the National Road DN1 at km 8+600;.

The traffic restriction starts in front of the “Automobile Bavaria” showroom, on lane 1 of the beltway road that branches off the DN1, between km 8+300 and km 8+450, towards Ploiești – Bucharest, starting Wednesday, 04.09.2024, 05:00.

Road signalization will be carried out according to legal requirements, and the implementation will take place on 03/04.09.2024, between 23:00 – 05:00 a.m..

The traffic restriction occurs in order to carry out the works related to Stage 2 for the upcoming Tokyo subway station, as part of the execution contract  “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai-Otopeni). Design and Build – Civil Works for Lot 1.1: 1Mai-Tokyo”;, at the upcoming subway station Aeroport Băneasa – Tokyo, on the alignment of the future subway M6 metro line, South Section.

The traffic is restricted according to the plan approved jointly by the C.N.A.I.R and I.G.P.R – Road Directorate.

The notice is valid until December 31, 2024.

High-level visit on the progress of the M6 works

Gara Băneasa Station, one of the most active construction sites of the future M6 metro line, Southern Section, received today the official visit of the Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, and the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu.

During the visit, the state of works on M6 metro line was presented.

The event was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure: Ionuț Săvoiu, Secretary of State, Mariana Ioniță, Secretary General and various other officials.

The visit was hosted by Metrorex through their General Director, Mariana Miclăuș, the Contractors Alsim Alarko-Makyol, Gülermak-Somet and the Project Supervisor – the Padeco Co. Ltd. – Oriental Consultants Global Co. Ltd. – Metroul S.A.

Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu emphasized that the only sustainable solution for economic development and for overcoming the traffic problem in Bucharest is to invest in infrastructure, in particular the extension of the subway network.

The Chief of the Executive said that all the necessary resources will be allocated for investments in major infrastructure and said that he would discuss with the Minister of the Interior and the Mayor of Bucharest to find solutions to the traffic problems in Bucharest that will be affected by such works.

The Constructor presented the progress of works for the Southern Section in general and for the upcoming Gara Băneasa Station, covered by the visit.

The officials discussed with journalists and representatives of the M6 implementation team, emphasizing that this project will continue to enjoy the attention and support of decision-makers for infrastructure investment in Romania.

M6 metro line is a major urban infrastructure project for residents and visitors to the capital, from home and abroad.

We all want Bucharest to be a modern capital, with fluid, efficient and environmentally friendly traffic, however the construction site works also cause discomfort which we understand, we feel and we are trying to reduce as much as we can.

The work on the future stations will result in the 14.2 km long underground double track linking Gara de Nord (the North Railway Station) with the Otopeni Airport and will uncover 12 new subway stations along the way.

Preparations began on August 24 for the works to connect the Main Line 6 M6 metro line with the current 1 Mai subway station.

WHAT ABOUT TRAFFIC?

Road traffic has been diverted on the basis of the Traffic Deviation Plan approved by the Traffic Technical Commission of the Bucharest City Hall, the Transportation Department, the Bucharest Streets Administration and the Bucharest Traffic Police.

The new operating diagrams of the traffic light systems at the intersection of Calea Griviței and Mureș Street and Bd. Ion Mihalache and Clăbucet Street and the road signs are being applied in accordance with the legislation in force, and the Traffic Brigade is supervising the smooth traffic flow in the area. WHAT ALTERNATIVES DO WE HAVE?

We encourage the general public that passes through the North-West area of the Capital to use the subway, a suitable solution to reach their destination quickly, cheaply and safely. At the same time, in support of the public living in the Bucharest-Ilfov Metropolitan Area, Metrorex offers the possibility of using the parking lot of the Străulești Multimodal Terminal, which has over 600 parking spaces.

Metrorex, through the Central Traffic Control Center, constantly monitors passenger traffic flows and takes all the necessary measures both by managing the increased flow of users as well as by adjusting the appropriate traffic intervals.

At the same time, depending on the passenger flow, additional points of contact with the public (ticket offices/access control booths) are provided.

Visit of the Ambassador of Japan to the construction site of the new M6 metro line

On 22 August, His Excellency Takashi Katae, Ambassador of Japan to Romania, paid a working visit to the main construction site of the new M6 metro line and to the building site of the upcoming “Tokyo” subway station. This visit reflects the commitment of both parties to the success of the “Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni” project.

During his visit, the Ambassador met with the Metrorex General Director Mariana Miclăuș and with representatives of the Metrorex Technical and Investment Department, as well as with the Project Supervisor, PADECO CO. LTD – ORIENTAL CONSULTANTS GLOBAL.LTD – METROUL S.A. Representatives of the Constructors involved in the two lots of the project were also present: Lot 1.1, ALSIM ALARKO – MAKYOL (South Section, 1 Mai-Tokyo), and Lot 1.2, GULERMAK – SOMET (North Section, Tokyo-Otopeni Airport).

Throughout the talks, the officials discussed the current status of the “Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni” project and the prospects for future development. The project is being carried out in strategic partnership with Japan and is financed from the state budget and from repayable external funds, including an external credit granted by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).

The visit to the building site of the upcoming “Tokyo” station gave the Metrorex’s General Director the opportunity to present the state of works on the station that will become a central point of connection between the Southern and Northern Sections of the metro line. The station bears the name of the Japanese capital, Tokyo, as a token of appreciation for Japan’s support for this project.

The new M6 metro line will consist of 14.2 km of double track, running 12 modern trains. The line will include 12 stations, providing a fast and efficient link between Bucharest’s 1 Mai district and the Henri Coandă – Otopeni International Airport. This flagship project is of public utility and national importance, according to Government Decision No. 496/2017, and will contribute to improving citizens’ mobility through integration with the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

M6 metro line is an important step in the modernization of Romania’s transport infrastructure, providing sustainable and comfortable mobility solutions for the capital’s inhabitants and tourists transiting the Henri Coandă Airport.
