Preparatory activities for the start of works on the North Section of M6 Metro Line

METROREX S.A. informs about the progress of the North Section of the future M6 Metro Line, Tokyo – Otopeni Airport section:

Currently, the joint venture Gülermak Ağir Sanayi Insaat Ve Taahhüt A.S. – Somet SA, the designated contractor for the design and execution of Lot 1.2 (North Section) of the “M6 Metro Line: 1 Mai – Otopeni” project, is working on the Technical Execution Plan and will soon begin preparatory activities to secure the construction site perimeters.

Following the issuance of the Construction Permit, with the support of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Bucharest City Hall, Otopeni City Hall, and the Ilfov County Council, the execution works will commence. Preparatory activities will start at the future metro station sites: Washington, Paris, Brussels, Otopeni, Ion I.C. Brătianu, and Otopeni Airport.

The “M6 Metro Line: 1 Mai – Otopeni, Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)” is a public utility project of national interest, as established by Government Decision no. 496/2017, with subsequent amendments and completions. The project addresses the mobility needs of the population by expanding the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The design and construction of the North Section of Metro Line 6 is financed by the state budget and external reimbursable funds – a foreign loan from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).

The future M6 Metro Line will provide a fast and comfortable transportation alternative, facilitating access to key destinations in the capital and Ilfov County. We thank you for your understanding and support in realizing this major project for our community.

Visit of the Ambassador of Japan to the construction site of the new M6 metro line

On 22 August, His Excellency Takashi Katae, Ambassador of Japan to Romania, paid a working visit to the main construction site of the new M6 metro line and to the building site of the upcoming “Tokyo” subway station. This visit reflects the commitment of both parties to the success of the “Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni” project.

During his visit, the Ambassador met with the Metrorex General Director Mariana Miclăuș and with representatives of the Metrorex Technical and Investment Department, as well as with the Project Supervisor, PADECO CO. LTD – ORIENTAL CONSULTANTS GLOBAL.LTD – METROUL S.A. Representatives of the Constructors involved in the two lots of the project were also present: Lot 1.1, ALSIM ALARKO – MAKYOL (South Section, 1 Mai-Tokyo), and Lot 1.2, GULERMAK – SOMET (North Section, Tokyo-Otopeni Airport).

Throughout the talks, the officials discussed the current status of the “Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni” project and the prospects for future development. The project is being carried out in strategic partnership with Japan and is financed from the state budget and from repayable external funds, including an external credit granted by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).

The visit to the building site of the upcoming “Tokyo” station gave the Metrorex’s General Director the opportunity to present the state of works on the station that will become a central point of connection between the Southern and Northern Sections of the metro line. The station bears the name of the Japanese capital, Tokyo, as a token of appreciation for Japan’s support for this project.

The new M6 metro line will consist of 14.2 km of double track, running 12 modern trains. The line will include 12 stations, providing a fast and efficient link between Bucharest’s 1 Mai district and the Henri Coandă – Otopeni International Airport. This flagship project is of public utility and national importance, according to Government Decision No. 496/2017, and will contribute to improving citizens’ mobility through integration with the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The North Section of Metro Line 6 has received the Building Permit

METROREX S.A. Announces the Obtaining of the Building Permit for Lot 1.2 of Metro Line 6, Marking a Significant Milestone in the Advancement of the “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)” Project

METROREX S.A. has successfully obtained the Building Permit for Lot 1.2 of Metro Line 6, marking a crucial step forward in the “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)” Project. This segment, known as the North Section, will connect Romania’s capital to its main air gateway, Henri Coandă International Airport, ensuring a vital link within the European transport network (TEN-T).

The construction is being carried out by the Gülermak Ağir Sanayi Insaat Ve Taahhüt A.S.-Somet SA Consortium under the design and execution contract signed with Metrorex S.A. for this section, which includes a 7.6 km route between Tokyo Station and Otopeni Airport.

At present, the Gülermak Ağir Sanayi Insaat Ve Taahhüt A.S.-Somet SA Consortium is preparing the Technical Execution Project necessary for issuing the Notice to Proceed with the construction works.

The North Section, Lot 1.2, spans a distance of 7.6 kilometers, including the stations Washington, Paris, Bruxelles, Otopeni, Ion I.C. Brătianu, and Aeroport Otopeni. This route will also include six interstation segments: Tokyo – Washington, Washington – Paris, Paris – Bruxelles, Bruxelles – Otopeni, Otopeni – Ion I.C. Brătianu, and Ion I.C. Brătianu – Aeroport Băneasa.

JICA Officials’ Visit to the Metro Line 6 Project

The “Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)” continues to make steady progress, reaffirming its status as a project of public utility and national interest. In line with Government Decision no. 496/2017, the project aims to address mobility needs by expanding the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

During the period of March 13-14, 2024, Metrorex had the honor of hosting a visit from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) officials, the financiers of the M6 Project, Lot 1.2. This visit included meetings with representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Metrorex, as well as representatives from the Contractors and Supervisors of the two sections of the future metro line.

The Director General of Metrorex, Mariana Miclăuș, led the working visit to the construction sites, guiding the Japanese officials through the various stages of construction of the future stations. The event was also attended by representatives of the designated Contractors: ALSIM ALARKO – MAKYOL, responsible for the design and execution of the structural works of the stations, galleries, and tunnels for Lot 1.1 – 1Mai-Tokyo (Southern Section), and representatives of the consortium Gülermak Ağir Sanayi Insaat Ve Taahhüt A.S.-Somet SA, the designated Contractor for Lot 1.2 – Tokyo-Otopeni Airport (Northern Section).

During the visit, at the future Expoziției station, the representative of ALSIM ALARKO-MAKYOL presented the work plans and the executed guide beams. At the future Aeroport Băneasa station, the officials were able to observe ongoing construction activities, including the coordination of monitoring activities, the formwork removal of the washing ramp, and the supervision of the works. At the future Tokyo station, the ALSIM ALARKO – MAKYOL Contractor presented the progress of the works for the preparation of the drilled piles and diaphragm walls.

The new Metro Line 6, an emblematic Project for Romania’s transport infrastructure, will feature a 14.2 km double track route and will serve 12 stations on the 1 Mai – Otopeni route. It will be equipped with 12 new, modern trains, designed to ensure efficient and comfortable transportation for passengers.

Through these continuous efforts and international collaborations, the Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni) is steadily advancing towards completion, bringing significant benefits to urban mobility and the economic development of the region.

Award Winner: A Strategic Partnership for Bucharest
After a competitive selection process, the Gülermak Ağir Sanayi Insaat Ve Taahhüt A.S.-Somet SA Association was selected as the successful bidder, based on the “Best Value for Money” selection criteria. The official announcement was made today, at 14.30, marking a crucial moment in the advancement of the Main Line 6 project, which will facilitate a fast and efficient connection between the city center and the Otopeni Airport.

Contractual Details and Project Funding
The contract value, in the amount of 1,278,415,271.87 lei (excluding VAT), reflects the commitment and significant investment in the modernization and expansion of Bucharest’s public transport infrastructure. Project financing is provided through a mix of state budget resources and repayable external funds, including an foreign loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), underlining the strategic importance and wider benefits of this project.
M6 Metro Line Impact: Connectivity and Development
With a total length of 14.2 km and 12 stations, the Main Line 6 promises to transform the travel experience for residents and tourists alike. The Tokyo – Otopeni Airport section, comprising 7.6 km and 6 stations, including Washington, Paris, Bruxelles, Otopeni, Ion I.C.
