T.U.C.B. students visit the M6 Metro Line site: a practical course about the future metro to Otopeni

Third-year students from the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest – Faculty of Railways, Roads and Bridges took part today in a study visit to the M6 Metro Line construction site, within an open lesson organised by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in partnership with Metrorex.

The visit was initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as part of its efforts to strengthen collaboration with academic community and to support the training of future specialists in the field.

Together with Mariana Ioniță, Secretary General within the ministry, the students received detailed technical information about the project and were encouraged to develop their skills through ongoing dialogue with industry professionals.

The visit took place on the work site of the future Gara Băneasa metro station, where the participants had the opportunity to observe the actual construction processes. Representatives of the contractor gave technical explanations about the works on going, including the operation of the TBMs “Sfânta Maria” and “Sfânta Ana”, used to build the tunnels.

The site specialists presented the current stages of the project and the technologies used, giving the students a practical perspective on how large-scale metro infrastructure works are carried out.

The meeting enabled a valuable exchange of ideas between students and construction and public transport investment professionals. The discussions ended on an optimistic note, with participants expressing confidence in the projects that will help improve urban mobility.

M6 Metro Line will be the first direct, rapid link between Gara de Nord and Henri Coandă International Airport (Otopeni), integrating air, rail and road transport into a modern and efficient system.

The project includes:
• 14.2 km of double track
• 12 modern stations
• 12 new trains

The line will offer a fast, safe and comfortable solution for residents and tourists alike, contributing to the development of an essential mobility corridor between the airport and the centre of the capital.

Study visit on M6: future leaders in direct contact with major infrastructure projects

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, together with Metrorex, hosted a study visit focusing on the extension of the metro network and the challenges of urban mobility, at the request of the Academy of Public Leadership – Future Romania, through the Vintilă Brătianu Association.

The event gave participants the opportunity to gain a close understanding of the essential stages of a major infrastructure project, from rigorous planning through to actual implementation. The emphasis was on the importance of attention to detail and of sound execution, decisive factors in the success of investments on this scale.

M6 Metro Line, one of the most important projects currently under construction, was the focal point of the visit. The project is financed from European and government funds and through the support provided by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency).

The participants visited the site of the future Gara Băneasa metro station, where they could see at first hand how the works are carried out and how complex the management of a large urban infrastructure project is. The visit proved a valuable experience for the participants, giving them a practical perspective on the development of urban transport and inspiring them to contribute actively to the future of infrastructure in Romania.

T.U.C.B. students visit the M6 Metro Line construction site

Engineering is one of the fields in which theory and practice complement each other in an essential way, and direct contact with the construction site becomes an important stage in the training of future specialists.

In this context, fourth-year students from the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest – Faculty of Railways, Roads and Bridges took part in a study visit organised by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure together with Metrorex, in order to observe the works on M6 Metro Line at close quarters.

During the visit they were accompanied by Mrs Mariana Ioniță, Secretary General within the ministry, who gave them information about the progress of the project and encouraged them to keep developing their knowledge by working with specialists in the field.

The visit took place on the site of the future Gara Băneasa metro station, where representatives of the contractor presented technical aspects and construction processes to the students. They also had the opportunity to observe the work of the TBMs “Sfânta Maria” and “Sfânta Ana”, which are building the tunnels on the SOUTH Section.

The experience offered a valuable practical perspective on a major infrastructure project and strengthened the students’ confidence that the profession they are training for plays an essential role in the development of Romania.

Spring has arrived on the metro: flowers, mărțișoare and good news

Spring has made itself felt on the Bucharest metro network too. Metrorex representatives welcomed women passengers with flowers and mărțișoare, offering spring greetings and bringing extra colour and joy to the metro stations.

The initiative is part of the tradition of celebrating the arrival of spring and sending good wishes to all passengers.

Passengers arriving at Piața Unirii 1 station can stop for a spring photograph. A special “instagrammable” board has been set up there for the season.

Progress on M6: TBM “Sfânta Ana” breaks through at Gara Băneasa station

March has begun on the SOUTH Section with the completion of the second tunnel segment, roughly 2 km long, between the future Tokyo, Aeroport Băneasa and Gara Băneasa metro stations, on Line 1.

TBM “Sfânta Ana” has excavated 2,006 metres and installed 1,334 tunnel rings, making a decisive contribution to the progress of the works.
With high-performance TBMs and sustained effort, we are building a new metro line for Bucharest, step by step.

The length of the metro tunnel that TBM “Sfânta Ana” will complete up to 1 Mai station is 6.6 km.

Prompt intervention on Tipografilor Street, in the area of the M6 Metro Line site

Following press reports regarding the incident that occurred yesterday, 26 February, in the vicinity of the construction site at Gara Băneasa, Metrorex states that it was caused – independently of the works on M6 Metro Line – by a crack in a water pipe belonging to the potable water supplier and the sewerage service operator.
The water ingress affected the road surface at the entrance to Tipografilor Street, at the junction with Șoseaua București–Ploiești. The area was closed off immediately, and the water operator intervened to turn off the supply to the damaged pipe.
The contractor for the South Section of M6 Metro Line immediately began stabilisation works, pouring approximately 150 cubic metres of fluid concrete into the cavity that had formed.

The situation has been remedied and is being monitored, with all the necessary safety measures in place.

International monitoring of progress on M6 Metro Line

Between 24 and 26 February 2026, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) carried out a new mission in Bucharest to monitor the project co-financed through the ROM-P5 loan agreement for M6 Metro Line.

During the visit, the JICA delegation, led by Ms Hiroko Amano, Deputy Director within the Europe Division of the Department for the Middle East and Europe, held working meetings with representatives of Metrorex, of the Ministry of Finance and of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The agenda of the mission also included site visits. The Metrorex team, coordinated by Director General Mariana Miclăuș, presented the status of the works on the sites of the future M6 Metro Line, as well as at the Străulești Depot and at the Metrorex Central Control Centre. During these visits, the progress achieved and the next stages of the project were reviewed.


“Bucharest International Airport Rail Access Link Project (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)” is a public utility objective of national interest, in accordance with Government Decision no. 496/2017, as subsequently amended and supplemented. M6 Metro Line contributes to the development of the trans-European transport network and to increased mobility, by creating a direct connection between the metro network and Henri Coandă International Airport.

Through ongoing collaboration with international partners, the project is advancing towards strengthening modern transport infrastructure and Romanian-Japanese cooperation.

Meeting with JICA to accelerate the project and secure its financing

As part of the mission of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on 25 February a working meeting was held at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, chaired by State Secretary Ionuț Săvoiu and Secretary General Mariana Ioniță, bringing together the Metrorex team and JICA representatives. The agenda covered priority topics in transport and infrastructure, such as:

– accelerating the delivery of the project and securing the necessary budget allocations;

– strengthening safety management in construction;

– financial matters relating to the consultancy services financed through the yen loan.

The dialogue reconfirmed the importance of Romanian–Japanese cooperation and the shared commitment to developing the
BUCHAREST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RAIL ACCESS LINK PROJECT (METRO LINE 6. 1 MAI – OTOPENI).

The boring shield “Sfânta Maria” has reached Gara Băneasa

The ‘Sfânta Maria’ TBM broke through the wall of the future Gara Băneasa metro station today, on the route of the future M6 Metro Line.

The boring shield “Sfânta Maria” is excavating the Line 2 tunnel on the SOUTH Section of M6 Metro Line, and today marks the completion of the second tunnel segment on this line.

The tunnel completed so far by the giant machine (TBM “Sfânta Maria” is 97 metres long, weighs 600 tonnes and has a cutterhead 6.60 metres in diameter), between the future Tokyo, Aeroport Băneasa and Gara Băneasa metro stations, totals 2,006 metres excavated and 1,334 tunnel rings assembled.

The length of the underground tunnel that TBM “Sfânta Maria” will complete up to 1 Mai station is 6.6 km.

“We are starting 2026 by marking yet another significant milestone in the construction of M6 Metro Line! The progress of both tunnel boring machines – the ‘Sfânta Maria’ TBM and the ‘Sfânta Ana’ TBM – is in line with the construction schedule for building the civil works for the SOUTH Section of the future M6 Metro Line! The “Sfânta Maria” machine has arrived safely at Gara Băneasa, whilst the “Sfânta Ana” tunnel boring machine is also heading towards this destination, having already covered over 1,600 metres and assembled 1,076 tunnel rings” said Mariana Miclăuș, Director General of Metrorex.

Changes to the traffic restriction on the DN1, in the Băneasa Bridge area

On the night of Thursday to Friday, 20-21 November 2025, from 11.00 pm, changes will be made in the area of the traffic restriction introduced at the junction of the DN1, Șoseaua București – Ploiești, with Elena Văcărescu Street and with Constantin Dobrogeanu Gherea Street, for a new stage of the works on M6 Metro Line, SOUTH Section.

Traffic measures:

  • Lane 3 will be closed in each travel direction.
  • The New Jersey concrete barriers on the central axis of the DN1 will be removed and replaced with white and red plastic bollards. The road signs will be set out in accordance with the approved traffic plan.

The measures are being implemented on the basis of the approval issued by CNAIR and IGPR.
