Temporary traffic restrictions in the area of the future Washington Station of Metro Line 6

Starting on the night of 13/14 July 2026, a new stage of temporary traffic restrictions comes into force in the area of the junction between Șoseaua București–Ploiești (DN1) and Strada Jandarmeriei, required for the utility relocation works for the future Washington Station of Metro Line 6.

The following traffic restrictions will apply during this stage:
• the left turn from Strada Jandarmeriei towards Otopeni is closed;
• straight-ahead movement on the Bucharest exit slip road of the Jandarmeriei overpass is closed.

The restrictions are imposed on the basis of the joint approval issued by C.N.A.I.R. and I.G.P.R., valid until 31 December 2026, with the possibility of an extension depending on how the works progress.

Road users are asked to drive carefully, to observe the temporary road signs and to use the alternative routes indicated in the area.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank all road users for their understanding and cooperation.

Updated information on the progress of the works and on traffic restrictions will be published periodically on the official website of the project and on the communication channels of Metro Line 6.

Temporary traffic restriction in the Piața Presei Libere underpass, on the night of 2/3 July

On the night of 2/3 July 2026, between 23:00 and 04:00, access to the Piața Presei Libere underpass will be temporarily restricted so that remedial works can be carried out.
The restriction is needed in order to repair the fault affecting the power supply cable of the surveying total stations installed in the underpass, in the area of the future Piața Montreal metro station, on the SOUTH Section of Metro Line 6. The fault was caused by the storm that hit Bucharest on the night of 30 June/1 July 2026.
Outside the period indicated, traffic through the underpass will run normally. Traffic on the carriageway outside the underpass will not be restricted and will not be diverted.

Access to the Piața Presei Libere underpass restricted on the night of 22/23 June

Access to the Piața Presei Libere underpass will be restricted on the night of 22/23 June, between 23:00 and 05:00.

The restrictions are needed in order to carry out maintenance work on the surveying equipment installed in the underpass, in the area of the future Piața Montreal metro station, on the SOUTH Section of the future Metro Line 6.

Outside the period indicated, traffic through the underpass will run normally.
Traffic on the carriageway outside the underpass will not be restricted and will not be diverted.

In order to reduce the impact on road traffic and the inconvenience to road users, the works are being carried out at night only, in accordance with the approval of the Traffic Police Brigade.

The works will be signposted in accordance with legal requirements, and once the activities are completed the road will be reopened and the road signs will be restored to their original state.

M6: works under way and temporary changes to traffic

Metro Line 6 will create the first fast, direct connection between Gara de Nord and Henri Coandă International Airport. The new line will have 14.2 km of double track and 12 stations, serving important areas of the capital and of the town of Otopeni: 1 Mai, Romexpo, Gara Băneasa, Aeroport Băneasa, residential, retail and business areas along the DN1, and Henri Coandă International Airport.

Complex construction works, the execution of underground structures and the relocation of utility networks are currently under way along the entire route of Metro Line 6. In order for these activities to be carried out safely, temporary traffic restrictions have been introduced in certain areas on both sections of the project, South and North.

Below are the main works under way at present and the areas where they affect traffic.

As individual interventions are completed, traffic arrangements are adapted in order to reduce the impact on urban mobility as far as possible.

Changes to access from Bulevardul Aerogării onto the DN1 for the works at the future Aeroport Băneasa metro station

From 30 May 2026, road traffic in the area of the DN1 – Bulevardul Aerogării junction will be temporarily reorganised in order to continue the works at the future Aeroport Băneasa metro station, part of Metro Line 6, and to build the underground pedestrian subway (access and tunnel).

The traffic measures will be in place for an estimated period of about seven months, so that the works can be carried out safely and with the smallest possible impact on traffic.

What changes in traffic
At this stage of the works, the access slip road from Bulevardul Aerogării towards the DN1 will be temporarily closed.
In order to maintain the flow of traffic towards Otopeni Airport, traffic from Bulevardul Aerogării will be carried on a new temporary two-lane slip road, built within the Metro Line 6 site, near Strada Grațioasă.
At the same time, on Bulevardul Aerogării, in the direction of Bulevardul Ion Ionescu de la Brad, traffic will be carried on two lanes.

Measures for the safety of road users
So that traffic can run safely, additional protection and traffic management measures have been put in place in the area of the works:

  • the creation of temporary pedestrian routes;
  • the installation of protective panels around the site;
  • the application of temporary road markings;
  • the creation of new pedestrian crossings.

The works and the traffic measures are carried out with the approval of the competent institutions, namely C.N.A.I.R., I.G.P.R., C.T.C. – P.M.B. and the Bucharest Traffic Police Brigade.

Traffic changes at the access to the Băneasa Shopping Complex, in the context of the Metro Line 6 works

From 24 April, changes to traffic will be introduced in the access area from the DN1 towards the Băneasa Shopping Complex, as a result of the works for the future Tokyo metro station, part of the Metro Line 6 – 1 Mai – Otopeni project.

These interventions are needed in order to build the infrastructure of the new station, including its accesses and pedestrian connections.

Planned works: an underground pedestrian passage will be built beneath Strada Pană Buescu. It will serve Access B of Tokyo metro station, located in the IKEA car park area, allowing passengers to reach the station safely.

Traffic changes: for an estimated period of about seven months, the route of Strada Pană Buescu will be altered before the roundabout under the road overpass, in order to divert traffic and allow the works to be carried out;

  • The overpass slip road will remain unchanged, with the existing vehicle accesses maintained;
  • Pedestrian movement will be ensured safely, on prepared pavements and via signposted pedestrian crossings;
  • Strada Viorel Ciurea will be connected to the DN1, providing an additional exit route from the Băneasa Shopping Complex.

The works are being carried out on the basis of the approvals issued by the competent institutions, namely the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR), the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR), the Technical Traffic Commission of Bucharest City Hall and the Bucharest Traffic Police Brigade.

Temporary traffic restrictions at the Piața Presei Libere underpass

Access to the Piața Presei Libere underpass will be restricted on the nights of 21/22 April and 22/23 April 2026, between 23:00 and 05:00.

The restrictions are needed in order to install surveying equipment in the area of the future Piața Montreal metro station, on the South Section of the future Metro Line 6. As part of these activities, survey reference points will be installed and used for the structural monitoring of the underpass and of the buildings within the zone of influence. The works are being carried out with the approval of the competent authorities.

Outside the periods indicated, traffic through the underpass will run normally.

Traffic on the carriageway outside the underpass will not be restricted and will not be diverted.

In order to reduce the impact on road traffic and the inconvenience to road users, the works are being carried out at night only.

The works will be signposted in accordance with legal requirements, and once the activities are completed the road will be reopened and the road signs will be restored to their original state.

Traffic diversion in Otopeni for the works at the future Bruxelles metro station

In the context of the works for the future Bruxelles metro station, part of the Metro Line 6 project (1 Mai – Otopeni), new traffic measures will be introduced in the Otopeni area.

For an estimated period of about a year and a half, traffic on Strada Oașului will be closed in the area of the future Bruxelles station site. Traffic will be diverted onto a newly built bridge, with two traffic lanes of 3 metres each, which will provide the link with the DN1 through the McDonald’s car park area, on the Strada Oașului – DN1 – Otopeni route.

The extension of the site facilities will be carried out without affecting traffic on Șoseaua București–Ploiești (DN1).

At this stage, works will be carried out to relocate the utility networks, including electricity, water, sewerage and district heating. For the safety of pedestrians, a temporary pavement will be provided.

Drivers are asked to proceed with care and to observe the temporary road signs, as well as the instructions of the traffic marshals present in the area.

The works are being carried out with the approval of CNAIR and of IGPR – the Road Directorate.

The Metro Line 6: 1 Mai – Otopeni project is declared a public utility project of national interest, in accordance with Government Decision no. 496/2017. The new metro line will provide the direct link between Gara de Nord and Henri Coandă International Airport Otopeni, contributing to the development of the trans-European transport network and to improved mobility in the Bucharest – Ilfov metropolitan area.

Temporary traffic restrictions on the DN1, at the future PARIS metro station, Metro Line 6

Metrorex announces the introduction of temporary traffic restrictions on National Road 1 (DN1), in the area of the junction with Strada Padina, for the execution of the works at the future PARIS metro station, part of the project “Connection of the metro network to Henri Coandă International Airport (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni)”.

From 24 November 2025:

  • In the Ploiești – Bucharest direction, traffic will be restricted to 2 lanes;
  • In the Bucharest – Ploiești direction, 3 traffic lanes will be maintained;
  • At weekends, additional temporary restrictions may apply in both directions.

Drivers are asked to proceed with care and to observe the temporary road signs.

The works are being carried out with the approval of CNAIR – SDN Bucharest, issued with the agreement of DRDP Bucharest, CTC PMB and the Bucharest Traffic Police Brigade. The approval is issued until 31 December 2025, and both the approval and the associated traffic restrictions will be extended in successive stages, depending on the progress of the works.

Update on traffic restrictions on Bulevardul Expoziției for the Metro Line 6 works

For construction activities under the contract “Connection of the metro network to Henri Coandă International Airport – Otopeni (Metro Line 6. 1 Mai – Otopeni). Design and execution of the structure of stations, galleries and tunnels. Lot 1 – 1 Mai – Tokyo”, METROREX announces the diversion of road traffic on a section of Bulevardul Expoziției.

The traffic diversion is scheduled to come into force on 14.11.2025 and is required by the works programme for the future “Expoziției – Piața Montreal” interstation on the alignment of the future M6 metro line, South Section.

Traffic will be diverted in accordance with the plan approved by the I.G.P.R. – Road Directorate Approval. Any subsequent change will be announced through an updated notice.

The traffic diversion and the road signs in the area of the works will be carried out in accordance with the legislation in force.

The works are being carried out in accordance with the Traffic Plan approved by the Technical Traffic Commission of Bucharest City Hall and by the Traffic Police Brigade, stage III.

Traffic measures:

On Bd. Expoziției, alongside the Metro Line 6 site, road traffic will be carried on a single lane, in the direction of Strada Aviator Popișteanu.

In the direction of the tram 41 terminus, alongside the Metro Line 6 site, road traffic will be reduced from two lanes to a single lane.

Access to and from Romexpo remains open to road traffic.

Metrorex thanks all road users on the above route, as well as the residents and businesses operating near the work areas, for their understanding.
